The idea stems from the traditional art of sewing used by the Kuna indians, who inhabit the San Blas island just off the coast of Panama. Mola is the name of this artistic technique resulting in a rectangle motive picture. It reflects a combination of the legacy of the Kuna traditions and the influences of the modern world. The Mola technique developed in the middle of the 19th century due to an increasing availability of colourful cotton substances. The inspiration of Molas came from mythological and religious themes, geometrical patterns, animals and occurrences of everyday life. The Molas are mainly produced by women whom have been passing on this unique folk art from generation to generation.
